City upgrades Killarney Gardens Roads Depot as first project under new Depot Improvement Plan

The City of Cape Town has completed significant upgrades at its Killarney Gardens Roads Depot, marking the first completed project under the City's new Depot Improvement Plan. The improvements form part of the Urban Mobility Directorate's ongoing investment in modernising operational facilities to provide safer, compliant and more efficient working environments for staff who deliver essential services across the metro.

‘The City’s operational staff work tirelessly, often in challenging conditions and at all hours of the day and night, to ensure Cape Town's transport network remains safe, functional and reliable. It is therefore essential that they have workplaces that are safe, modern, compliant and fit for purpose. Investing in our depots is ultimately an investment in the people who keep Cape Town moving,’ said Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility.

‘Killarney Gardens represents an important milestone as one of the first road infrastructure management depots to be upgraded through this programme. The improvements we've completed here enhance both the functionality of the facility and the daily working environment for our staff. From upgraded electrical infrastructure to improved kitchens, ablution facilities, operational bathrooms, structural repairs and a complete repaint, every aspect of the project contributes to creating a workplace where employees can perform their duties safely and with dignity.’

The upgrades were implemented by the Urban Mobility Directorate in partnership with the City's Facilities Management Department and include improvements to the depot's electrical infrastructure, refurbished kitchen and ablution facilities, upgraded operational staff bathrooms, repairs to the building structure, and a full internal and external repaint.

‘Killarney Gardens is only the beginning. We are committed to systematically improving depots across Cape Town as part of our broader investment in infrastructure, operational excellence and our workforce. By investing in our people and the facilities they use every day, we are building a stronger, more resilient service that will continue to benefit residents well into the future,’ concluded Councillor Quintas.
